S.Y.K'S SEW VESSELS..

The first of the three big pas- senger liners now under construc- tion for the N.Y.K's European service, the s. Hakone Maru, i expected to be launched from the Mitsa Bishi Works at Nagasaki about the end of October. Tha vessels being built for the N.Y.K. are almost of the same class as the new United States Shipping Board "535's.” Their principal dimensions are to be length 315 feet, breadth 62 feet. OSS tonnage 10,000 tons. speed 17 koois, with accom- modation for 120 first class, 56 ar and class and 180 third-class passengers. The two sister ships to the Hakone Maru are to be named the Haruna Maru' and the Asama Maru. The Hakone when completed will replace the Kaga Maru, and is now provisionally scheduled to sail from Shangbai on its first voyage on December 5. The Haruna will take the run of the Inaba Maru, and the

Asama will relieve the Sado Marc.

Kawasaki, Mitsubi- shi, Ishikawashima, Fujioagata and Asano Shipbuilding Yards, Crags Dock, Osaks Iron works. Yokohama Dock, etc., manage to maintain business by construct ing men-of-war. The Kawasaki and Mitsubishi yards are building battleships, cruisers and destroy r3; tbe Fajinagata கர Ishikawashima yards, cruisers; and the Osaka Ironworks and the Asano yard, aircraft depat-ships. The mercantile ships which they are also building are hardly enough to enable them to live.

POPPY SEED IMPORT TO CHINA PROHIBITED.

A Peking report of the 4th inst.. states: The International Anti- Opium Association announces that the Governor-General-in- Council in India bas prohibited the export of poppy seed to China and has empowered the post- masters at Calcutta, Bombay.
