Reception on Silver State.

On the new Shipping Board passenger steamer Silver State, moored in the barbour on Friday night, a most enjoyable reception was giran by Capt. E.P. Bartlett, | her commander, to celebrate the vessel's maiden voyage to Hong- kong.

There ware 300 guests present and the evening passed merrily with dancing to most ex- cellent musio tendered by the ship's band. The guests com prised prominent business men and harbour officials and their wives. The promenade deck, which was used for dancing, was artistically decorated with bunt- ing and the novelty of the affair did much to add to the pleasant- ness of the party. The music was the talk of the evening. The musicans were students from the University of Washington who are making the round voyage during vacation. They rendered really splendid dance music and sang in harmony, at the same hme, which had a very melodions effect and made dancing easier.

The Silver State sailed at noon Jon Saturday for Seattle with 171 passengers and a good offering of cargo, including a quantity of fast) freight. There were 16 saloon passengers for way ports and 35 for Seattle beside 126 in the steerage who are going right| through.

Notable among the passengeraj were are Mr. and Mrs. G.P. Nelson, of Hongkong and Wham- pos Dock Co., to Japan on holi- day; Mrs. Church, wife of Mr. R.J. Church, of the International Banking Corporation a: Hong- Long. who is going to ber home in Dallas, Texas; Dr. S. J. Barrows. a physican of Chicago, who is now homeward bound after a tour ro and the world.

Khyber from London.

This morning the P. and 0. steamer Khyber arrived at Hong- kong from London and other ports. The vessel brought 37 pas sengers for Hongkong and 52 are proceeding through to Shanghai. and Japan. The cargo for local consignees amounts to 600 tons and includes 220 tous of iron and steel plates from Ant- werp, 100 tons of pig lead from London and 280 tons of general lines from London and wayports. There were 263 bars of silver bul- lion on board for & Hongkong bank from London.
