PROPOSED SHANGHAI RICE MARKET.
Rice dealers in Shanghai have been discussing a proposal to es- tablish an exchange. The matter has been shelved, however, some memberaarguing that an exchange would probably be the cause o frequent crises in the market.
while others contend that its action would tend, to maintain normal prices.
CONGRESS AGREES ON DUTY SCALE
A Washington report says: Compensatory duties of 10 per, cent. ad valorem on all leather! goods, and 7 per cent. ad valorem on textiles composed wholly or partly of long staple cotton, are! understood to have been agreed on by the House ways and means committee. The House rejected he proposed leather products :ariff by a vote of 99 to 62.
