RAISING SUNKEN VESSELS.
The method adopted by the Neale Ship-raising Association, 'Ltd., of raising sunken vesseli was demonstrated in Newcastle recently, in the presence of a company of shipowners and others interested in shipping. The principle of the invention. consists in sending down to a wreck a couple of pontoons on which there is a conuing tower containing four men. The poɑ- zoons are fitted with powerful lights to locate the wreck and to help to manoeuvre the pontoona on earb side of the wreck. Once this has been done the lights are -witched off and the whole power diverted to a number of electro- magnets placed alongside each pontoon. A single magnet bas a lifting power of 25 tons, and there ara 200 magnets on a full-sized pontoon. When the pontoons are made buoyant they rise slowly to the surface, raising between them the wrecked vessel. By means of this invention vessels can be

HARBOUR POLLUTION BY OIL.
There has been a further devel- lopment in the United Kingdom in the situation as between ship- owners and the important barbour authorities on the question of the polation of harbours by oily It will be recalled that the matter was referred by the Shipowners' Parliamentary Coro- mittee to a Sub-Committee in order that they might confer with representatives of the port and harbour authorities on the sub- ject. A fully representative meeting took place on May 27, at the House of Commons, when it Harbour Authorities' Association was arranged that the Dock and should consult with the principal port authorities, and ascertaio whether they would be willing to provide. either themselves or by contract, receptacles in harbours ·
