SALVAGE AND LLOYD'S ARBITRATIONS,

Mr. J. Wilson Potter,.. the obairman, speaking at the first annual meeting in London of the regard to the Lloyd's arbitrations: Salvage and Towage Co, said, in

We regret that all the efforia of our representatives to impress apon the arbitrator the heavy, rise in all expenses con nected

with shipping have fallen on deaf ears. After all, it is perhaps not wonderful that King's counsel cannot credit the immense rise in cost of every- thing connected with shipowning, as chese facts do not come in; timately into their experience. We have put our case very folly before the Committee of, Lloyd's. The underwriters have to pay for these salvages-they, so to speak. live by their losses, because if

be no premiomas. I am glad to say that our representations have baen met very sympathetically by Lloyd's Committes. It is not to their interest that a salvage com. pany should makeh loss, because. if these salvage services had not been rendered the money loss to the underwriters would be some tem to fifteen times the amount they bave paid to us under the Arbitrations. You will hardly credit it, but the awards under," these arbitrations have in nearly every instance amounted to lens than 7 per cent, on the value salved of varying amounts up to £330,000, ship and cargo. I think therefore, we may expect & mach mora just appreciation of our claims on the part of the arbitra- tors in the future."
