INTERESTING CASE TO-DAY. That the present strike of paint- facrapers has been influenced by a new faster other than that rela- tive to the dispute over wages in revealed by a case opened before Mr. R. E. Lladsall at the Magis tracy this morning, when a Chi- nese mamber of the Paint- scrapers Guild was charged with an attempt to intimidate anotheri worker at Hungbom.

Mr. Lea Longinotto appeared for the defence.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police conducted the prosecu tion in person, and, in relating the circumstances which led to the charge being preferred against the defendant, said that in one) aspect it was a small case and in another aspect it was important because it showed there was a new labour development in the Colony which indicated an at- tempt on the part of Labour Un- ions to secure control of all the men engaged in a certain trade! and so to freeze out independent contractors and workinen. The result of this would be that in the end they would secure control of the supply of labour and thus be able to contract work for others. and dictate their own terms of pay. Though such a develop- ment was not. naw in the labour movements of the world, it was now to the Colony. Before that Labour confined itself to disputes of wages. Now the disputes were generally concern- ed with the employment of labour and the attempt to secure control of the labour market. Those men were organized in [corporation or guild. The chief Association had its head- quarters at Saiwanho, while at Hooghom there was a branch of the same organization. The defendant was the head of this branch association in Hungbam. He was formerly employed by one of the principal witnesses,
