An unusual type of vessel with internal-combustion engines bas just been launched at Gothenburg for the Grangesburg Ore Com- pany. The new vessel has been specially designed for the trans- port of ore, and the decision to adopt Diesel motors for propul- sion was arrived at only after very careful investigations bad been made by the independent engin- eers and naval architects. It was found that owing to the largine room being shorter than is necessary in steamer and the absence of sabonkers the dis
ril utlon offergo is better than in a steamer, and the separate ore heaps may be made much lighter, thus diminishing the stresses on the ball. The Vessel is 385-ft. long between perpendiculars and is capable of carrying 8.000 tons. Two Diesel engines of 1,300 i.b.p. will give A speed of 11 knots, and the total consumption will be about 93: roas per day. The oil bunker capacity is in the neighbourhood of 500 tons. The engine room is arranged mid- ships, allowing three large cargo holls forward and three aft, all sarved by electrically operated winches. No fewer than fire ships of the same size and type are being constructed in Gothen-

future.
Coastwise:--The demand for tonnage is slightly assier than a fortnight ago but indications point to a renewal of activity in the near future.
The coal-market in Japan is showing some signs of improve ment in that the stocks of dust coals at the mines and at the various shipping ports have great- ly diminished of late and the opin- ion of cost-operators is that this will have a strengthening effect on the market in the near future. As usual at this time of the year the Kaiping coal market is dull with very small enquiries. It is not anticipated that much im- provement will be seen before the Autumn. Prices remain / very steady and although stocks are: a little in excess of the quantities recently stored they are by no means heavy.
