first-class. 36 seccond-class and 180 third-class passengers. In addition, the NY.K. Company has built two passenger steamers called the Nagasaki-maru and Shanghai-maru, both of 5,500 tons. which will ply between Shangbai and Nagasaki from August next, LAUNDRY PLANTS KEROAD. Several large shipping lines bave installed their own laundry plants. In Glasgow the Anchor Line have their own establish- ment at Whiteinch, and at Southampton the White Star Line run a laundry on extensive lines. A big vessel coming into port may unload a wasting equal to 20,000 pieces, comprising chiefly bed-sheets, tableclotbe, pillow slips, towels, etc, all of which bave to be washed, dried, and finished within a very short space of time. There are many laundries in London, Liverpool and Glasgow which cater special- ly for this class of work by contract, and as long as prices (per 1,000 pieces were compar- atively low it hardly paid a ship owner to instal and run a plant of his own. The question has, however, now arisen whether such a proposition is feasible ja view of the hoavy increases in the cost of finished laundry work, and, judging by the general interest of shipowners hoth at home and abroad, and. the fact that several have decided to build. laundries of their own, it looks as if the practice will become general.
