AMERICAN COMMERCIAL

MISSION IN CHITANT Reports purporting to come from Vladivostok say that the Amarican commercial mienion in Chita has been disappointed at the railway showing and, bas eerimated that large amounts of money will be facsary to put the Ussuri Line in condition to haul freight as a pagina proporis tion. In other matters, however, the American is said to have been pleased with the zbawing, especially with the large stocks of raw materials awaiting export..

MANILA MARKETS.CO

Mesars. Warner, Barnes and Co., Ltd., Manila, stäte—The continued sugar weakness pre- vailing in New York has been further reflected locally, and the Iloilo market during the past fortnight has ruled vary dull, with downward tendancy. The copra market is quiet but steady, with little variation in prices. The coal market is again easier and prices have declined further. The rice market has ruled quiet at unchanged prices during the past fortnight. The demand still runs Op red class rice. At the close there is a better demand for rice from the southern provinces, and dealers are con- sequently making 10 cta/20 ets. more per sack. American flour market continues very uncertain, and, contrary to expectation, the American market for 1st grada" flour has advanced 80 cta. gold per barrel since our last circular, and dealers on account of such fluctuations wilt only purchase for their bare requirements.

SMR. RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS.

The traffic returns of the 8.M.R. Co Manchuria Lines for the month of May amounted to Y.5,460,429, being a sharp de crease of Y.2,319,593. This decrease is attributed to the

HONGKONG, CANTON & MACAO encouragement of early booking

of produce from the interior by the South Mazeboria Railway Company, partly because of the masterly disposition of the goods cars, and also from the desire to close the accounts for the fiscal year ended on March 31st last.. Acting upon the above principle, the major portion of produce bad. been shipped from the interior to the seaboard ports, almost wholly to Dairen, by the end of March. The force of inertia romained well into the month of April. In May, the storages at the in- terior stations abarply decreased. Then, the policy of the Chinese Eastern Railway to divert North | Manchurian goods to Vladivostok way began to tell, resulting in an abrupt decrease in the volume of southbound goods. In the above | light, the returns for the month of May may be said to do bardly justice to the legitimate traffic of that month.
