HOW THE BLIND CAN SEE WITH THEIR EARS.

Due of the most marvelous inventions which battles the under- standing, is the optophanie, an instrument by which all books will be opened to the blind. It is the work of Dr. E. E Fournier D'Aibe and its perfector and recent demonstratoris Prof. Archibald Barr, of Glasgow. The blind person wears a telephone receiver. On the side a book, face downward is being fed into a machine which communicates letter by letter, word by word, to the mechanism, thence over the wire to the ear and brain of the blind.

The explanation of this is that on the "roof" of the optophone are strong electric lights which illuminate the letter. However, similar some of them may be, notwo letters are actually slike: each throws a different shadow, casts different rays and these rays are transformed into sopads.

NEW FLYING BOAT, THE LARGEST IN ENGLAND.

This huge Vickers-Saunders Valencia Flying Boat has a lifting capacity of 5,000 pounds deadweight and bas twin pro- pellers driven by two 550 horse powe: Rolls-Royce engines. It has a wing span of 115 feet. The boat is 56 feet in length and is expected to attain a speed of 100 miles an hour..
