CALCUTTA'S NEW DOCKS. The work is well in band op the King George's Dock in Calcutta. Owing to the nature. of the soil, it is proposed to con- struct both entrances and the dock itself by sinking wells "or monoliths. The first section of the work will consist of the entrance lock and dry docks and the northern portion, comprising altogether 11 berths, arrangments being made to use the first five of these as soon as they are ready, probably by 1927. It is estimate that each year's work will involve the utilisation of large quantities of bricks, lime, cement, steel, and stone, and that 13,250,000 cubic feet of excavat- ing will be done, employing some 10,000 labourers. The dock system will consist of a basin and two long arms, each about 4.500 feet long by 650 feet wide. When complete the water area of the dock will be about 190 acres,

BELFAST SHIPYARD WAGES. At the conterence between Messrs. Harland and, Wolff, Lid." and the Belfast District Commit tee of the Engineering and Ship- building. Trades Federation the question of the stabilisation of wazes it was pointed out on behalf of the firm that a reduc- tion of 6. per week in two maieties. Sa. per week to time workers, or 82 per cent. to piece- workers from the 1st May, 1921. and 3. per week to time workers 0: 744 per cent. to piece- workers 2.9 from the 1st June, 1921, bad been agreed upon in all the shipbuilding centres across the channel, and it was intimated that while this principle would have to be adopted locally the firm was prepared to make some alterations in the dates on which the reduction becomeopera- tive, the alterative proposal being a reducation of 3s. per week to timeworkers and 71⁄2 per.cent. to piecewerkers, to take place on the first pay in May, the second redaction of 34, and 712 per cent. respectively to be applied after' the July holidays, which in effect meant that Belfast shipyard em- ployes would enjoy a fipsocial benefit for a period of six weeks over 3 cross-channel fellow worker. The question of a sliding scale to regulate wazes hased on the cost of living, apart from the above redactions, was also discussed. The firm put forward a scheme, as did the federated trades, there being a slight difference of opinion as to the most beneficial method of adjusting the present figures in relation to the cost of living, and the present standard of wages paid. It was deemed advisable to further adjourn the conference, the federated trades in the mean- time to call a special delegate meeting when the firm's amended: liding scale proposal could receive their consideration.
