other, it ispat ..to thejt mutual advantage to break to their relations unless under un- avoidable circumstances. The Anglo-Japanese Alliance, which is essentially of a defensive character, may be likened to the League of Nations on a small scale, designed for the mainten- ance of peace in the Far East and in the Pacific. Japan has not the slightest idea of endeavouring to make use of the alliance for the solution of her population problem.
It has been a matter of regret that many people in Australia, who seem to he suffering from Japanoybutik, have been indulg- ing in arguments of an anti- Japanese character. The declara- tion of the Australian Premier in favour of the alliance, by what- ever motives he may have been influenced, is 8 matter of Bati-faction. Grest Britsia and
Japan have no possible causes of collision, and they should co-operate for the preservation of peace in the Pacific. since America will not enter into any alliance with another country owing to the Monroe Doctrine. The world is now engaged in the movement for "disarmament. sog" that as much money as possibla may be spared for the work of ~~ economic reconstruction, and the par.Anglo-Japanese Alliance will go 1/2 pm. long way toward achieving this 3/5 dis. end. Some people in Australie 15.4% disadvocate an understanding with America because of the alleged menace of Japan, but the adop tion of such a policy on account of the Japanese phantom would not be in keeping with the tradi tional policy of Great Britain.
