SHIPPING NEWS.

U.S. MERCHANT MARINE, Chairman James Farrel ad- dressed the National Foreign Trade Convention, at Cleveland, O, and said that the future of the American Merchant Marine Ser- vice and its development were at stake. He said that the Govern ¡ment bad lost $800,000,000 by not selling the merchant flest at the time of the armistice. He suggested an International Con-, ference to stabilize the shipping situation, and recommended the ohartering of the Goverment flest to individuals, and said that it was the duty of all Americana to prevent the elimination of the U.S. oversea fleet from the world's carrying trade.

CARING FOR IDLE BHIPS.

The project, which has been Bet up by the Shipbuilding Department of the Mitsui BasBAT Kaisha to found an office to administer idle ships at the port of Uno,Okayama-ken, is general ly accorded a welcome b shipowners at the present ticke.... of shipping depression. The Vice-Chief of the Department is now staying at Uno to see that preparations go forward satis- factorily. It is said that the | Department infends to establish another similar organisation for another Okayama port. If this scheme becomes an established fact, idle ships, to a tonnage of some 200,000, will be accom." modated in these two places.

SUGGESTED SOUTH AFRICAN STATE FLEET.

Replying to the Labour motion advocating a State fleet to carry on the whole of the trade of the Union, in support of which the example of Australia was quoted, the Minister for Railways and Harbours said the circumstances in which Australia made a profit were exceptional. He said he would see the accounts of the past few years; he could then judge properly. The motion pro- pored & monopoly which would require at least four lines of ateamers. Fleets to give even such a supply as was now given by the Union Castle Co. would cost £10,000,000 If the State had a shipping monopoly, freights

freight would be trebled.

SAVED SHIP FROM FLAMES. Lloyd's Silver Medal for Meri- torious Services has been award-

ed to the master of the British steamer Aschenburg, and also to her chief officer and the chief engineer. While the Aschenburg was at Galveston on December 23, 1920, a fierce fire broke out in a neighbouring oil-tank vessel, on the pier, and on the oil which spread over the surface of the water. Captain McKenzie, with the assistance of the chief officer and the chief engineer, piloted the vessel through the flames. The Auchenburg was then found. to be on fire, but the outbreak was, extinguished. The Aschen- burg would undoubtedly have been totally destroyed had it not been for this courageous conduct.
