Sir Thomas Raffles' Great Achievement.

February 6 1919. witnessed the cootenary of the foundation of Singapore

Sir by Thomas Stamford Raffes, which suggested to Dr. Gilbert, E. Brook, Mr. Watter Makepeace and Mr. Roland, St.-J. Braddell the publication of an historical record of the city during the Inst! hundred years. The work in two volumes, with numerous illustra. tions, is published by John Murray. and containe nearly <welve hundred pages. Numerous writers collaborate under the supervision of the three general editors just mentioned. In these circum- stances it is only to be expected that the various chapters should be of unequal merit and of corres- pondingly fluctuating interest. But this criticism does not detract from the value of the book as a whole, nor from the praise due to the committee responsible for its production.

Primarily these volumes must be regarded as a tribute to the memory of one of the greatest men who have helped to build the British Empire. It is fitting,, therefore, that one of the opening chapters has been entrusted to a writer who in a simple and com: pelling narrative has been able to visualiso the founder of Singapore, in a way that has not been accom- plished in any other published work. The Rev. William Cross contributes a moving and brilliant account of the great figure to whom the British Empire owes 90 much. It is an account that one would like to see republished and distributed throughout the schools, in order that children

No one nowadays can question that Raffles was right and his detrac- tors wrong, or fail to realise that it was only through the sheer force of character of this one man, faced as he was with a persistent and underhanded op- position, that the commercial: supremacy of Great Britain, and the political supremacy also, was established in the Far East, observes a roviewer. The want of vision and the small-mindedness displayed by his opponents would eventually have caused the loss of one of the most valuable pro- vinces, and certainly the most commanding strategical positions
