THE COAL STRIKE.

London, May 14, Despite the outward gravity of the fresh coal complications, Ministers and Members of Parliament generally do not anticipate a serious extension of the railway trouble. It is believed the Premier is summoning a new conference of owners and miners to meet him at Chequers next week with a view to discussing fresh proposals.

The Aquitania took 2,600 passengers, including thirteen babies, and the complement of 644 stewards complete. The majority were unionists, only 150 volunteers being required.

It is unlikely that there will be an extension of the industrial trouble during the week-end. It is stated that the Premier has invited the coalowners and minors to a fresh conference at Chequers, after Whitsuntide, when he has finished entertaining Prince Hirohito. Meanwhile coal is being moved from ports to industrial centres without a hitch.

London, May 15.

A dramatic change bus occurred in the coal situation. It appears that the transport workers and railway men are re-asserting theircom- monsense and recognising that public feeling on the question of a stranglehold of the nation is strongly against them. Mr. Frank Hodges declared that the psychological moment for Triple Alliance action had gone and said the best aid they could give the miners was

funds. Mr. Cramp, moreover, eased the situation by the instruction of payment of full wages for the suspended railway men. The Greenwich Power Station workers struck hoping to paralyse South London Tramways, which were not stopped owing to the assistance of officials and volunteers.

CROWN PRINCE OF JAPAN.

London, May 14, Accompanied by Prince Kanin and Baron Chinda, Prince Hirohito paid an interesting visit to Oxford University, where he inspected the Colleges, playing fields and rowing practice, and was enthusiastically greeted by the crowds. He returned to London in the evening.

DARING SINN FEINERS.

London, May 14 Rebels in Dublin captured an armoured car proceeding to Mountjoy Prison, after a fight in which one soldier was killed and one wounded. Subsequently the car appeared at Mountjoy and was admitted. The occupants, uniformed as British officers, produced documents and took Mr. Griffith, the Sinn Fein Vice-President, and four other Sinn Feiners from their cells; but were forced to abandon the prisoners at the barrier and bolt for the car, in which, they escaped amid a hail of bullets. The car. was afterwards· found abandoned on the Howth, road. It is reported that the Governor and his assistant were bound after the documents had been produced. Outrages In London.

London, May 15.

The News of the World reports a number of outrages in London last night, apparently organised by Sinn Fein. Masked and armed men were concerned. All the miscreants escaped. For example, three youths armed with revolvers entered a house at Catford, fired. at and wounded a man and his wife, not seriously, and escaped on bicycles. Four mer called at a house at Shepherd's Bush, asked a man who was who in Ireland and fired, wounded the occupier. Several armed men forced an entrance into a house at. Tooting, springled petrol and set fire to the place. The Fire Brigade extinguished the flames, but the damage is serious.
