GROWTH OF ROTARY CLUBS.

What the Movement Stands for.

Sixteen years ago the first Rotary Club was inaugurated in a small way in Chicago, Mr. Paul P. Harris, a lawyer of that city, bringing forward the idea of put- ting business on a basis less material than it had been, by substituting service as the end in view instead of profit-making. On February 23rd, 1905, his original Rotary Circle held its first meeting, and from that time onward Rotary has advanced with rapid strides.

About ten years ago Rotary took root in the British Isles, and in little over a your's time no fower than eight clubs woro form- od. For some little time these clubs worked independently of each other, but they soon got into! touch, and early in 1914 federated themselves into the "British Association of Rotary Clubs with headquarters for the time being in Edinburgh, the first president being Mr. R. W, Pentland, and the honorary secretary being Mr. Thomas Stephenson.
