M. E. F. AIREY,

Superintendent. Hongkong. April 8, 1921

The competition of Japaness and American ateamers has become keener, these steamers being usually offered at cheaper rates than those asked for by the owners in Hongkong.

LUMBER CARGOES FOR THE EAST. Reduction of the lumber rate from $12.50 to $10.00 a thousand feet from Puget Sound to the Orient has resulted in stimulation of inquiries for lumber. Only a few weeks ago the Conference rate was $17.50, and a $10,00 rate greatly diminishes the chances of a profit, and this is especially true where return cargoes are by no means assured.

be

SEATTLE WHARF CHARGES, All wharfage charges on impor- and export freight through the Port of Seattlo are to eliminated, and work on revising the tariffs has been begun by the Port Commission and some private dock owners, as the tariff of both public and private dock owners is to be uniform in all particulars, the revision covering storage charges and practices as well as overseas, intercoastal and other cargo movements, Decision to. abolish wharfage charges of 25 cents a ton in imports and 30 cents a ton on exports, now assessed against the shipper, was made so that this port might be the cheapest one on the Pacific Coast for the shipper as woll as for the ship operator.

R. M. B. REFRIGERATOR SHIPS.

With a view to establishing sailings from thix port. of refrigeratorships every two weeks during the coming season, the local offiers of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company is advised by the head offices in London that its first vessel would sail for Saattle and Pacific Coast ports early in April. The vessel to be employed in this service will be new ships of 15,500 tons and each possessing liberal refrigerating cargo capacity designed to handle perishables in transit from this coast to Europeau ports. In the service of this concern are said to be the finest appointed refrigerator ships under the British flag, and the fruit and fish products of the Pacific Coast are expected to find this service of immense value in forwarding the output to points across the Atlantic.
