MR. CHAMBERLAIN'S APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL AMITY.
Britain's Pacific Policy.
London, March 22. In the House of Commons, Mr. Chamberlain stated that the Estimates had been brought down as low as was considered safe in view of the uncertainty and disturbances in the world.. He declared that the idea of competition in armaments with the United States was horrible, and for us unthinkablo (cheers). Mr. Chamberlain alluded to the widespread feeling in Britain that we were not content, after fighting a great war for freedom and destroying the great military autocracy of Central Europe, to contemplate a vista of years in which the nations were still struggling under the burden of these immense armaments, whereby all other national services were curtailed. He hoped other nations with greater need than we would think less of the needs of war and more of the needs of peace, and settle down to reconstruct the world. He declared that Britain was the only European nation able to balance its Budget. We had also begun to wipe off the foreign and internal debt.
