When everything was ready and it was time for the Meadow Grove folks to start to the picnic grounds under the willow tree beside Lily Pond. Mr. Scribble Scratch, the fairyman schoolmaster, Hent Nick around with Tag Turtle and bis daddy to collect baskets, and Nancy went ahead to set tables and get everything ready so thore wouldn't by any time lost after they all got there. There wore to be games and races and prizes, and everything to make the day as happy as possible,
Nick climbed trees in a twinkling, with his magical Green Shoes, and got the baskets belonging to Mrs. Chick Chicaros, Mrs. Owl, Mrs. Squirrel Mrs. Bill Blackbird (who hadn't packed to go south yet), Mrs. Thousand-Legger, and all the others.
He was a wonder at it. He'd got a basket, slide down the tree, set it on Tug's broad back, and go up after another. After he'd got all the baskets from Mapse-Tree Plats, and Old Oak Apartments,
Mr. Scribble Scratch sent Nick around with Tug Turtle and his daddy to collect baskets.
and all the other overhoad dwellings, he knocked at Mrs. Wood- chuck's door, and Mrs. Bunny's, Mrs. Mink's and all the others whe lived underground.
Mr. Torty Turtle and his son, Tug, said they thought they start in the express business, they wore so loaded down with bundles and haskots and things.
When everything was collected, Nick scampered on ahead to help Nancy, and left the turtles to take their own time, which wa an unwise thing to do, heenuse you know how very unreliabl turtles are. If I winbod to send my markating home for 12 o'cloc lunch, I'd never depend upon & turtle, should you?
But anyway, Nick went on ahead, because the Otters had tol him they had a sliding board which the picknickers could use i they would put some slippery mud on it. Nick know where ther was a lot of perfectly lovely mud and off he hurried to get some.
