A BUDGET OF ARNOLD DENNETT STORIES,
One still thinks of Mr. "Arnold | Bennett as of the younger school of writers, and so he is, despite; the facts that he was born in 1867, and that twenty years have passed since he gained public favour with "Anna of the Five Towns." During that period he has given abundant evidence of versatility, turning out a goodly stream of capital novels, whether of the Five Towns or elsewhere, alternated with notable plays Hiko the collaborative
"Mile- stones" or instructivo treatises } in miniature`such as "How to Live on Twenty-four Hours a Day." Then ho gives us a volume on the ways of authors and publishers, and, still again, a travel book, "Those United States."
Mr. Bennett has now sot a new fashion, or revived an old one, in the form of a Commonplace Book. He has embodied in aj volume a sheaf of pages from his notebooks and given it the title of "Things That Have Interested Me." (Chatto and Windus, 9s. not.)
Mr. Bennett's interests, as has been seen, are wido and varied, and the things he has noted range from horoines in opera to barbera and railway accidents; from style to stunts; from hotel servants fo wine vintages; from watching a football match to going down a mine.
Episodes, comments, opinions, reflections and stories are jotted down just as they occurred to the novelist face to face with the interesting thing. And the stories jaro excellent, pick where one will. Take this one of the old days of the horse omnibuses --
