EARLIER TELEGRAMS.

GREEKS AND TURKS.

London, Feb. 23. The delay in the proceedings of the Near East Conference yesterday was due not only to the Illness of the Turkish Grand Vizier out to the difficulty of reconciling the claims of the two Turkish lelegations each of whom insists that it is the sole official repre- sentative of the Turkish people. Bekirsami Bey, head of the Nationalist delegation, declares that he is determined not to give way to the Constantinople Government or the Greeks. He says the Nationalists desire a free and independent Turkish Turkey. Mean- while the Greek delegation is equally uncompromising. It is stated that it has been gingered up by a telegram from Athens, sent on behalf of King Constantine. It seems that while Britain is not adverse to the Greek idea of cutting the Anatolian knot with the sword the French and Italian military experts declare that a Greek advance on Angora would be madness. The Italians urge an agreement with the Kemalists and say otherwise that, failing a gigantic Inter-Allied expedition, there would be a hopeless deadlock. It is stated that France, not being hopeful of an immediate settlement of the Near Eastern question, favours negotiations for à general armistice on the Turkish and Nationalist fronts during which the Allied forces would be withdrawn from Asia Minor and the Allies would then act as joint mediators between the Greeks and Turks.

E

ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE.

London, Feb, 23.

The "Times" Wellington correspondent reports that Premier Massey says' that the recent statement of Sir J. Eindlay that Australasia objects to renewal of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance does not represent official opinion. Premier Massey added that. New Zealand and Australia aiready had a thorough understanding, with the Imperial Government with regard to Japanese immigration. Britain recognised the rights of the Dominions to decide who should enter their countries,

Students of the question opine that New Zealand is not opposed to renewal unless impossible conditions are imposed, as for example equality of treatment as raised at the Peace Conference or such an America Interpretation of the Treaty as would make

war with possible.

THE EX-GERMAN CABLES.

London, Feb. 23.

A New York telegram says Washington dispatches are more hopeful of the prospects of settlement of the dispute with regard te the disposal of the ex-German cables. It is, understood that France has now agreed with Britain and the United States but the Japanese: delegates, with whom the question of the plant at Yap is being discussed, state that they are unable to proceed with negotiations because they have not received instructions from their Government,

ANTI-BRITISH AGITATION.

London, Feb. 23.

Justice Cohalan of New York, a leading American Sinn Feiner, speaking at an Irish dinner in Chicago, declared that he desired to see the British Empire dismembered because it menuced the United States, He argued that the United States should insist on Britain "libérating" Canada and the West Indies as a basis of negotiations for the settlement of its debts to America. Justice Cohalan's state- ments are typical of the anti-Allied agitation now being carried on throughout America by Irish-Germans.

CADETS DISMISSED FOR LOOTING.

London, Feb. 28.

In the House of Commons, Sir Hamar Greenwood admitted that a number of auxiliary cadets, attached to the Irish Constabulary, who had been dismissed by their Commandant, Crozier, for organised looting, had been sent back to Ireland on the advice of General Tudor, commanding the Irish Constabulary, for trial. Crazier and his sub- crdinate officer have resigned and the resignations have been accepted.

The feature of Chesterfields is that they

begin where other cigarettes leave off.

In other words, besides pleasing the taste, Chesterfields go them all one better-they satisfy! Just like a long drink of cold water satisfies when you're thirsty.

No other cigarette can give you this new enjoyment because none can copy Chester- field's blend.

It's a blend of the finest TURKISH tobaccos from Xanthi, Cavalla, Smyrna and Samsoun and several varieties of the choicest American. And the blend itself-the skill with which these tobaccos have been proportioned-is a real discovery in cigarette making.
