THE RUBBER SITUATION.
London, Feb, 17. The rubber situation was discussed by Mr. Hotchkiss, the Pre- sident of the General Rubber Company in an Interview with a
representative of the "Financial Times." Mr. Hotchkiss was disinclia
ed to regard the present slump if it does not last too long as an junmixed evil. · After last year's over-trading there was no indication
of an early recovery from a manufacturing standpoint. He approved
|the Rubber Growers Association's' movement for present restriction of output provided the latter was purely voluntary, but strongly opposed artificial schemes tending to force up prices or Government interference. The General Rubber Company's belief that the present trouble was only temporary was demonstrated despite the curtail- ment of tapping operations in the Malay States and Sumatra by all the labourers being retained and otherwise utilised. He regarded a |florin to half crown as a fair price for the plantation product.
