(By "Je N'y Pense.")
*An Indian
(Extract from a daily paper, February 15th, 1921: was brought before Magistrate, genturday to explain why he precipituled himself from the reranigh of the Sikh Temple on the st December .... He said he was sitting on the verandah of the Temple with his legs dangling outside, when he saidruly felt giddy. The Magistrate ordered him to sign a band of Stun to be of goed behaviour for six months.")
The Temple bells were ringing and a Sikh with legs a-swinging Sat upon the fane-verandah in a contemplative mind;
Alas! here I go! When a feeling of vertigo made him say
Vouchsafe to me, O Vishnu, that I land on my behind. (Forgive, if, in my hurry, my expression's not refined.")
But his prayer was unavailing. for his body struck a railing Which up-ended him; he landed on a safer part-his head. But he didn't greatly suffer since his turban formed a buffer Fortunately for his top-knot which he would have struck
instoad.
(Had it not been for his turban he had been as good as dead.)
#
Then a passing Bobby spied him and incontinently hied lam,
And weuld hear of no excuses while escorting him, to gaol, Where he stayed until the morrow very greatly to his sorrow, For he could not muster up the cash to let him out on bail. (How oft in trouble do we find reputed friends to fuil ?),
*
The Magistrate next inorning gave the mun à solemn. warning,
Effectually enforced by the infliction of a fine:
"You must keep your brain-pan steady and prevent it going
giddy
When you sit with legs a-dangling on a vacred Hindu shrine. To avoid such actions.flighty you should stick to plain 'Bolaití
Pani, leave intoxicants to those more used to wine,
If this occurs again you'll meet with punishment condign."
