Mr. Blaksmare, President of the National Chamber of Trade, whose predictions as to cheaper food made a few months ago are already being fuldlled, now conddently declares that the presen; bad times will quickly pass and that a period of happiness and prosperity La coming. The reason therefor was the abundance of foodstuffs in the market. There was a rapidly increasing tendency towards cheap- ness and when wages went further the contentment of the workers would result in enabling manufacturers to give arm quotations and promise delivery dates. Thus increased exports would mean levelling up in the rate of exchange between Britain and America. He gave us an example the following reductions notifed on January Ist:-Sweet biscuits, 2d, to 6d, per lb., coffee, 2d, to óð. per lb, les, 2d. per lb., soap and sugar, Id, per ib., jam, Sd. per lb. The prices of bacon, hams, lard. cocoa, etc., commenced to be reduced first in February. Flour was reduced by two shillings per quarter. The reduc- tians were not temporary, as great economic changes were transpiring in food producing countries, where there" was vastly increased pro-| duction. He painted out that a vital factor in the future was the elimination of horse transport, as millions and millions of acres had hitherto been producing oats and hay for animals.

Baron Hayashi presided at a farewell luncheon given by the Japan Society to the retining Chinese Minister, Mr. Alfred Sze. Re- gretting the departure of Mr. Sie from London. Baron Hayashi smphasised that Chinese friendship with America was necessary alike to Europe, Japan and China and he was glad that men like Mr. Sze were going to Washington. Whatever happened, China would have! the sincere support of England, America and Japan.

Mr. Sze, responding, spoke of the uses of societies like the Japan. China and Asiatic Societies in spreading knowledge and improving relations.

IRISH STOWAWAYS.

Washington, Jan. 5. Two men claiming to be Feter McSwiney, brother of the late Mayor of Cork, and Daniel O'Callaghan, the present Mayor of Cork, have arrived at Newport News. Virginia, as stowaways on the American steamer West Canon from Ireland. Both were arrested and subaequently released, the latter ander guard, as McSwiney carried 1 passpor.. The State Department has ordered an investigation as regards D'Callaghan's arrival and intimate that, unless extraordinary extenuating reasons are produced, it is probable he must be trested i as an ordinary stowaway. O'Callaghan has declared that he is pro- ceeding to Washington to give evidence before the Irish Committee of Inquiry
