THE NEAR EAST.

Paris, Dec. 1

Now that Greece appears decidedly unequal to the task of main- taining peace in the Near East French public opinion is leaning more and more towards the revision of the Serres Treaty with Turkey. As "Le Temps" has pointed out, France cannot see why she should continue spending blood and money in Cilicia for the mere sake of keeping Thrace and Smyrna under the sway of the Kaiser's brother-in- law. "L'Echo de Paris" also thinks that negotiations should be ea- tered into with the Turks. The French troops in Cilicia should be recalled, and economic interest only be retained. Leading French circles believe that France and England, who are ruling over millions of Moslems, are in fact the world's greatest Islamic Fowers and should a jointly in the Near East. DiBcuties may soon arise which they can only overcome if closely united,
