London, Dec. 13. After a dreadful night, Cork City yesterday presented with September, 1920. spectacle comparable only to a town in Flanders after a German bombardment. The fires blazed all day in basements of great.stores despite the efforts of the Fire Brigade, although reinforced from Dublin. The stillness of the fire area was only braken by the|After allowing far.— [rumbling of motor lorries and the crashings of walls. When evening fell the city was strongly patrolled by troops with orders to sum- |marily shoot looters. Gatherings of furniture reraovers were bany throughout the day removing furniture from threatened areas, while hundreds are leaving for surrounding towns. The latest jestimate is that altogether 140 hoosi, were destroyed and the damage Ila believed to amount to £7,000,000. Two thousand shap workers were thrown out of work. The Catholic Bishop solemaly, announced in the Cathedral he would ex-communicate everybody connected with ambushing Crown forces.

which it is proposed to appropriate

In the House of Commons, replying to Mr. T. & O'Conner with regard to the Cork fire, Sir Hamar Greenwood stated that the police and military gave all possible assistance. A certain amount of looting occurred in the early morning. The police made a baton charge on Bccount

as follows, viz:- To write off Loudwal

a crowd of 100 looters and arrested several. It is unknown by whom To place to Credit of

| the fires were started (Labour and Independent Liberal ironical cheers), Sta Provident Funds 3,700,00

Sir Hamar Greenwood protested most strongly against the suggestion To Reserve for Bad and that forces of the Crown started the fires (cheers). There was no Doubtful Debts....... evidence to that effect. Obviously such fires were only possible as an argument to he used against the Government's policy in Ireland.

Replying to Commander Kenworthy Sir. Hamar Greenwood declared there was not an atom of evidence that three civilians were dragged from the houses and shot after the ambush, that the hoses of the Fire Brigades were cut and the Fire Brigades fired oz. Every available policeman and soldier in Cork turned out immediately and without their assistance the Fire Brigades could not have got through the crowds. There was evidence that the fires were started with incendiary bombs which the forces of the Crown in Ireland did not possess but which Sinn Fienera possessed.

THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.

Leados. Dec. 13.

The Times"states that the Geneva Assembly of the League lengthily discussed the report on the election of four non-permanent members of Council, na provided in article four of the Covenant. This is a barning question owing, "inter alia.”" to China's anxiety to be given a chance in the election. The Assembly finally passed by 27 votes to 4. a recommendation of Mr. Balfour, Mr. Benes and Dr. Wellington Koo in favour of the selection of three of these members from among the members of the League in Europe and two American continents and one from the members of the League in Asia and remaining parts of the world.

SERVICE IN THE DUTCH INDIES.

Flague. Dec. 13.

A report from Vjenna that the Dutch Government had offered to engage three thousand Austrian State officials for service in the Dch ladies is officially denied. It is stated that out of a very considerable number of technical and scientific specialists from abroad who applied for Dutch Indian service, 336 have already been engaged or will shortly be engaged, including physicians and engineers, a large number of whom are required.

CHINESE STUDENTS IN BRITAIN.

London, Dec. 13.

The China Association in London has issued a memorandum dealing with the education of Chinese students in Britain. It suggests that following the example of the United States, Britain should divert £100,000 yearly from the Boxer indemnity to the maintenance of such, students and emphasises the resultant advantages to British trade.

SOVIET'S ULTIMATUM TO LITHUANIA.

London, Dec. 13.

A Lithuanian official telegram from Korno says that the Soviet troops are concentrating in the direction of Vilna. The Government of Moscow has issued an ultimatum to Lithuania that they cannot tolerate the presence of allied or nestral troops in Vilca as it is contrary to the Russo-Lithuanian peace treaty of July.
