Taking the exports of bituminous coal alone for the twelve months ending 31st July last, these show a total of 15,440,- 028 tons, as compared with a total of 8,892,621 tons for the same period in 1919, and a total of 10,913,617 tons for a similar period in 1913.

It is noticeable that the in- crease in American exports is largely due to the enormously increased shipments from that country to France, Italy, Scan- dinavia, and Netherlands--all European countries which were previously largely dependent on British coal.

Further, the American exports for the month of July alone are even more impressive, the ex- ports of bituminous coal for the month of July 1920 being 3,356,802 tons, compared with ä [ total of 2,027,206 tons for the months of July 1919 and a total of 2,244,530 tons for the month of July 1918.

The one outstanding lesson is that the British miner has enter ed upon this strike in a falling market.
