Besides the Premier and Mr. Bonar Law, Sir R. Horne was present at this morning's conference. It is understood the Government has arrived at a new basis, which, if acceptable to the miners, is likely to provide a satisfactory settlement. The miners' representatives are reporting the result of the conference to the Miners' Executive, this afternoon, and the continuance of the discussions is officially regarded as a hopeful siga.

Later.

After an hour and a half discussion at the headquarters of the Miners' Federation this afternoon, Mr. Hodges said the conference between the oficials of the Federation and the Premier would be renewed to-morrow morning.

The continuance to-day of the informal conversations between the miners and atinisterialists, which began yesterday, has brought a tone of optimism into the situation. Messrs. Hodges and Smillie, in a brief interview, intimated that the spirit of cheerfulness is going to be maintained. Nevertheless it must be remembered that actual negotiations had not been resumed, although the conversations had been preparing the way therefor. Anyway, the strike is likely to last through the week, for even when an agreement is reached a fresh ballot is now declared to be necessary. Meanwhile a hopeful sign Is the reported intention of the Government not to proceed immediately THE TREASURES OF THE JAPANESE COMMERCIAL with the Emergency Bill, which is bound to raise heated opposition the House of Commons and complicate the chances of settlement.
