SCHOOL AQUATICS.

CHINESE SPORTS

The Chinese schools aquatic sports were held at the Viétoria Recreation Club yesterday after- noon in the presence of a large number of schoolboys. The pro- Framme was carried out without a hitch, keen inter-school rivalry being manifested throughout the proceedings. -The competing schools were: Queen's College, Ellis Kadoorie School, St. Paul's College. Ying Wah College, St. Stephen's College, Sal Ying Pun School, Wantsai School and Yau- mati School, the first two mention- ed institutions having the largest number of representatives. Leung Tit Sang, a young, and capable swimmer, secured the champion- ship shield, the winner of which last year was D. Laing of the same College.

The prizes were distributed at the gynasium by Lady Stubba at the conclusion of the sports.

Mr. J. L. McPherson, Secretary of the Chinese Amateur Athletic League, thanked Lady Stubbs to giving away the prizes and H.E the Governor for his interest in matters pertaining to the welfare of the young folk, particularly on the athletic side.

The Governor, replied on behalf of his wife. He expressed his pleasure in noting the develop ment of the sporting spirit among Chinese schoolboys and hoped that the next school swimning sports would see

a greater number of competitors.

The presentation of a bouquet to Lady Stubbs by a young boy and cheers for the Governor and Lady Stubbs wound up the pro- ceedings.

FRANCE'S STRONG MAN,

Paris, Sept. 2

All the papers, a few Socialists excepted, are unanimays in ex- pressing the deepest satisfaction at the outcome of the Presidential election, which they say conclusively shows that France is repudiating party strifes and wrangles and has adopted the palley of order and work and social progress.

"Le Gaulois" perceives the dawn of a new republican era.

invests him with power to carry on his tasks undertaken as Premier. "Le Journal" writes that the imposing majority given M. Millerand France now has a Head whose persuasive and an authority will ensare harmonious governmental action and continuity,

as

From France's remotest districts reports are piling up in Havas office testifying to the nnanimous satisfaction over M. Millerand's election." Important leading provincial papers join, with the Parisian press to view the election as the happiest event and concurring to regard M. Millerand as the best qualifed to uphold France's prestige and ensure her promot sennymic rehabilitation. They eulogise the clear-mindedness and will power of the new President, who Premier but secured for France the benents arising from the Peace Treaty and stopped the on-rush of anarchy, thus ensuring France her bessent unparalleled tranquillity in the midst of disturbed Europe. Public spinian în Paris and the provinces is unanimous to view that the elastion was prompted solely by patriotism and the spirit of national union and as a fit answer to popular aspirations boding well for the future. Alsatian and Lorrain papers and the devastated regions poners are most sanguine, greeting the elevation to the highest ofice of the man who in a few months tenure as High Com- missioner succeeded in revivifying, peorganizing and potting in tone again with the mother country the provinces turbed for äfty years under the Prussian yoke. The leading paper in North France pertinently some up the unanimona impression by stating that he did not go to the Elysee Palace in the ordinary way; he was actually pushed there by the nation's consensus of opinion as they felt that a strong-willed man was needed.

The remarkable ease and rapidity with which such an usually elaborate operation as the reshaping of the Cabinet was carried out in a few hours are eulogistically commented upon by most of the papers, who unanimously approve of the choice of Senator Leygues | as Premier.
