ARABS WANT BRITISH OCCUPATION.

London, August 24.

Jamascus, the principal Sheikhs from the territory east of the Jordan tave communicated with Sir Herbert Samuel requesting British occupation of their country. Sir Herbers Samuel, in the course of a tour, met a most representative gathering of Arabs at Essalt and announced that the French Government had renewed its assurance that it did not wish to interfere in affairs east of the Jordan. Sir Herbert added, however, that as the French bad fully established, their influence at Damascus it would be necessary to separate the district from the administration of Damascus.

Describing the nature of British help in the East Jordan districts, Sir Herbert Samuel said it was proposed to establish a separate, administration to assist the Arabs to govern themselves through a number of most experienced British Politial Officers who would help the population to organise defence and local police, promote peace and commerce and see that justice was carried out. The population would be consulted regarding expenditure from taxes and there would also be complete freedom of trade with Palestine. but there would be no question of compulsory military servire nor of disarmament. The principal instructions to the Political Officers would be to help the people to govern themselves.

SITUATION RATHER BETTER.

London, August 24: A Way Office communique says reports from Mesopotamia indicate that the situation is somewhat better. The area north-east and north of Bagdad is reported quiet. Action for peace has been taken south of Hillsb, where a party of Sikhs, who were covering the construction of blockbouses, were attacked by a strong body of tribes men six times but were beaten off every time with heavy losses to the assailants.
