Padernil ages son, Chairman, said the Committee had brought to the notice of the should never be confused with Government the representations of British residents in China that the so-called erg substitutes, neither in the spirit nor the letter was the Anglo-Japanese treaty which contain little or no egg and which will not serve the | being observed in Shantung. He was confident that if Japan spon- | taneously offered China a settlement on neighbourly and amicable terms she would do much to promote harmony in the Far East and disprove the criticism which ascribed to her a policy of aggression, Mr. Anderson paid a tribute to Doctor Morrison, who, he said, did his best to guide the Chinese Government into wise principles, which ifig from a mere trace to quanti- followed would have brought about a better position than at present.

Is' cvanection with apprehensions expressed in France with regard to the Krassin negotiations, especially that France's claims on Russia may be prejudiced by Britain receiving Russian gold in exchange for supplies, Reuter understands the fundamental purpose of the negotiations is to establish trade relations. It may be neces-be able to supply increasing sary to employ a certain amount of gold in order to native the beginning of these operations, but the British Government, like the ether Allies, is seeking to obtain not gold but food and raw material for West Elrope. It is emphasised that the interview between the Premier, and M. Krassin was not arranged until the French view was received and the Allied representatives will participate equally with the British in all discussions before the Supreme Economic Council.

Peris, June 3. M. Hillerand has instructed M. Avenol, the French representa tive at the Inter-Allied Economic Council, en route to London, re- garding economic negotiations with M. Krassia.
