BISHOP LANDER. -

(Continued from Page 23 Perhaps we have already got some [glimpse of this. The Jews brought| thair knowledge of the unity' of God, the Romans thair law and order, the Greeks their perspective of art, the Anglo-Saxona their love of liberty. The African brings his simplicity, the Indian his spiritua lity, the Chinese his industry, his patience and his sense of humour. To-day He looks at these different nations and says "Other sheep 1 have of these folds,” and they are to form one Rock. Perhaps He foresaw the unhappy divisions that would read His Church and therefore He prayed that His peo- ple might be one so that the whole world might believe in Him. There are great, movements today towards the union of Christendom. It will be the foremost subject for discussion at the forthcoming Lambeth Conference of the 275 Bishops of our Church. 1 believe that the Chinese Church, as she gets stronger, will make for the unity of Christendom. This |diocese has a splendid opportuni- ty in the fufülmens of Our Lord's aspirations.

the Anglican communion the dioceset the parish nor the congregation. is the unit. The Bishop of this diocese is a Bishɔp who has fex English cragregations and a few thousand members of the Church of England. His daties prevent his remaining with one congrega- tion. I ask you therefore to ea- courage the chaplaina who are working amongst you, doing their |discoft ånd. Decessary work in a place like this. The Bishop 13 Bishop of thousands of Chinese and this Cathedral is the Mother Church both for English and Chi- b232. Of the ordinations that 1 have taken during the last thirteen) years and the confirmations too, the vast majority have beeń Chi- nese. It has been a matter of serious regret to me, that it has been impossible, owing to language fifficulties. to organise the Church in ene symud.

la bidding the congregation good bye the Bishop asked them to pray for the appointment of the right man as his SUCCESSOR. The appointment was in the hands) of the Archbishop of Canterbury and he could cut see it could be in better hands for the Archbishopi was cognisant of the needs both of English and Chinese and was cognisant also of the work to be done. "When he is appointed 1 know you will receive him as you have received me, and I trust you will give him every encourage- mint. Now that this Church is is richly endowed. I trust it may be possible if necessary to And some compensation for loss on ex- change. For the new Bishop. will you sympathise with his care for the Church? If it should 30 happen that he is a man who comes straight from England with-i jout any previous knowledge of the Chinese language. I would suggest that you be very patient with him. for the brst year of two should he derose most of his time to acquir ing a knowledge of this difficult: language. Personally I have felt handicapped all my episcopate through not having adopted that coarse at the out set. It will be be an immensa help to him to feel that as he comes back from his; up-country trips he can tell the the English congregations of needs, it may be of Yancac-fu, Nanning-fu, Pakhoi, Shui Hing, Canton or elsewhere, and koow that he has only to mention these needs for them to be supplied to We the utmost of your power. should seek the spirit of Christ, who looks upon these maltitudes and sympathises with them, for they are his sheep without a shep- herd. The events of time are mov- ing along very rapidly. It may be we are bastening towards the end of the age, and what the New Testament and our creed calls the second coming of Christ. Let us bay up every opportunity of bring- Tel. ing in the sheep of other folds to His care so that we may stand with joy amongst the great multitude of every tribe and nation which no man éan number "who wash their robes and make them white in the blood of the Lamb."
