The French call attention to paragraph 15, annexe 2 of the Peace Treaty. which permit such measures in the ease of voluntary default by Germany, and the French state they are desirous of work- ing in most loyal co-operation with the Allies and invite them to join her. THE GERMAN "SUPER-GUN.

MAY BE OUTRANGED BY BRITAIN,

In the spring of 1918 the (ier- man feat of firing shells into Paris from a distance of 74 miles caused a great amount of speculation. Many strange theories were advanced 'in the Press as to the method adopted: but what really happened," says the Gunner." "was that the German had taken a big neral gun. had ined it down" (ie.. put in a new tining) to shoot a 92 shell, and thus had reached the creat range of 120,000 metres Wha: propellant they used is not known exactly set; but it pro- bably gave a muzzle velocity of 13,000 foot seconds, and this, with the high trajectory sending the shell up to a height where air resistance was very much lessen- ed made the range. The shell was specially constructed with very thick wall, with driving bands forward and rear and with

wb fuses. Obviously the idea of the two fuses was that if the shell began in tumble and fell anite base instead bf its nose, detonation would still be certain.

"Allowing the Germans full credit for the exactness of their calculations to get the range sithin a mile or two in shooling at Paris an error of a mile did not matter there was nothing of original grains in Big Bertha. The idea of it was in Jules Verne. British gunners had neverdoubted tha: it was possible to construct guns with ranges enormously greater than those in use ip But fortress, ship, or the field. they had never thought of making guns which would be usefull only for a huge target like an open city: because that was not their idea of starfare..

Nor is it safe to say that Big Bertha' has made a prece- dent, and that in the next-war fixed guns with ranges up to 100 miles will be employed. It is difficult to see how they could be made t pay. An aeroplane could ultiply the range by at least five. the weight of the shell for bomb) and be much sarer in its jaim and enormously cheaper in its

cost.

"But it is safe to say that if guns of the 'Big Bertha' type.

extreme range, intended to bombard some definite fand very large) objective, are proved to be of practical value in warfare, the British Forces will not be without them." During the course of the Great War British gun designers tackled the problem
