EARLIER TELEGRAMS.

AMERICA AND GERMANY. --

London, March 31-

A telegrain from Washington says the tomogratie and Republican leaders are proceeding with a plan to pasa a res sahition declaring peace between the United Statca adi Germany, despite the objections of President Wilson. The joins resolution provides for a certain measure of reciprocal trading with Germany and the repeal of the President's was powers and it allows Germany forty-ove days after the adoption of the resolution in which to agree not to assert any... claim against the United States which could not be asserted under the Treaty of Versailles.

Washington, April 1. Despite President Wilson's objections the joint resolations by the Democratic and Republican leaders declaring the state of war with Germans ended were introduced in the House of Representatives and reletred to committee.

Mr. Flood (Democratì opposes the revolution on behalf of the Government, contending that Congress has no constitu tional right to declare a uste af peace and can merely request the President to issue a proclamation thereanent.

FREIGHT RATES TO THE EAST.

London: April 1.

The Tunes" serwis to be doubtful if the recent decision of British shipping lines serving the Far East toigtrease export freights from the United Kingdom will be painfred vring w the redaction in the price of bunker reals and the fact that the Japanese Board of Trade has not signified its intention »f approving of the rise in rates. As regards the claim of the For Faviron lines that their rates compare very favourably with other routes, the Times" instances the fact that while the highest raje en measurement cargo from the United Kingdom to Japan 14 58, det per ton, the highest rate to the Mediterranean ports is 126, and it remarks that the competi in the Japanese lines seems 25 exert a considerable infavore o rates to the Fat Fakt.

IF WIVES SERVE ON JURIES..

WHO WILL LOOK AFTER

THE CHILDREN.

The recent Act removing sex disqualific ions has been hailed as the woman's charter of free- dom, but is not always remem- bered that it brings with it responsibilities as well as pri- vileges. How many women, for instance, realise the full possi- bilities of that clause which states that a person shall not be exempted by sex or marriage from the liability to serve as a joror?

Asked for his opinion on the subject Mr. Holford Knight, the champion of sex equality at the Bar, replied: "Since women have sought and have succeeded in winning equality with moga io the discharge of certain public duties they must be prepared to contemplate the sacrifice de- Imanded in their fulâtment.

"Personally I do not think that women jurors will be called upon to deal with all that diversity of issues which are at present Isid before men jurors. On the other hand, in the business of our courts

lof_women-jurors would prove off great value, and I presume that the regulations will be framed with an eye to these particular occasions.

But what the average woman (will went to know is whether she will be taken away from her household duties to attend at a court of law.

The woman's point of view was put to a "Daily News" represent- ative yesterday by Mrs. Will Crooks, "I certainly think somė exemptions should be given."she Isaid, "A woman who has a busband and family to look after should not be burdened-with these additional duties.

"If she is away, who is to give the husband als dinner when he comes home? Who is to feed the children?

There are many cases in the Courts in which women's in- terests are concerned where a | jury of women would be farmore suitable, than # jury at men. It would ber & pity

to lose the services of married women. because their expérience and knowledge of life would be of great value.”
