Marshall's romantic comedy. "The Duke of Killicrankie." was presented by the Mario Tempest Company last night at the Theatre Royal to a good house, and so ably was it produced that the high reput- ation of the Company which it has already gained for Itself WAB Mtill further enhanced. The play is so free from laboured by incidents and padding that from ilo moment of making acquaintance with the characters to the expose, interest is fully commanded. There are few plays that call for Bach all-round merit in the play-152), 6 4, 5 7,7 5. ers as in "The Dhike at Kal- crankie." The story is entirely dependent on its interpretation by four characters.

In the hands-of the Maric Tempest Company, all its charms were brought out to the full. Though essentially a modern. "The Duke of Killicrankie" ro- tains in his make-up something of the bold and devil-may-care lawlessness which distinguished his more remote ancestors, and it

is around the manifestation of this ancient trait in the Duko's obaracter that this fine romantic comedy is written.

The action of the play revalves round the Duke, Ian Douglas Mac Bayne, whose prizos of life draw. hún like a millstone to the carri He commands the Life Guarde, owns & Press, and is somewhat-of- a Socialist. His overtures to the Lady Henrietta Addison for her hand in marriage draws forti no response from her, who confesses thateho cannot but consider him us n friend. Man is up against Nature, und strength is the first- essential, while running is a good second and selfishness over- shadows all. The lady is abduct- ed with the help of Mr. Henry Pitt-Wolby, M.P., a friend of the ! Duke. A telegram is sent to Lady Addison informing her that Lady Glenfill, her aunt, is ill, and on her railway Journey sho 16 decoyed and taken to the Duke's fortress Crag-O'-North, where she and Mr. Pift-Welby's love, Mrs. Mul- holland, who chaperoned Lady Addison, are confined, and the Lady is thero taught to love the Duke. It is here that the scene reaches its pinnacle of interest. The two women, at first un conscious of the trap into which they had fallen, realise the danger to which they are exposed, when the object of the Duke ja explained to them, The Lady cannot at first make up her mind to marry the Duke, although she realises that her release depends on her so doing. After a woek's stay. the Lady begins to love the Duke, and everything and happily and even Mrs. Mulholland, who was engaged to the M.
