* EXPERIENCE" IN POLITICS.
A Labour correspondent of the Observer writes:-One of the most prominent questions in the Press during the past week has been whether Labour is fit to rule. The last three by elections, following each other very rapidly bas driven home the fact that Labour is now a real force in politics. At St. Albans and Bromley, where Labour can- didates had not contested the seats before, there were remark- ably heary Labour polls. The Span Valley election resulted in the return of a Labour member for the first time. These three elect- ions showed a total Labour vete exceeding that polled for Coalition candidates. These are facts which must clearly be reckoned with st the next General Election. I am not concerned with the situation as it may affect the Coalition, but it may not be without intere-t to consider it from the Labour point of view.
Some sections of the Press have rushed to the conclusion that at the next General Election Labour will sweep the country. Whilst there can be no shadow of doubt. that there wall be a considerably increased
representation of Labour members in the House of Commons in the next Parliament, it is by no means so certain that. they will be able to command a majority. For the Labour Party to be in the position of the pre- dominant party it would need to increase its representation from about sixty to at least 350. Even with the tide flowing in favour of Labour this is very large assumption:

AS OFFICIAL OPPOSITION. At the present time it would appear, taxing all the facts into consideration, that the next House of Commons will contain a very large group of Labour members, comparable in strength to that of any other party, but not large enough to carry on an Adminis- tration itself. Such a situation would be regarded with satis faction by many members of the Labour Party, for it would enable the party to consolidate itself during a term as the official Opposition. It would, moreover, enable the parts to put consider- able pressure upon the Gorern- ment in power, without the Labour Party having to take responsibility for the difficulties and perplexities which it con- siders are largely the result of the mistakes of the orthodox parties. But let us assume that the Labour Party has to take over the reins of government after the next election. The question then arises as to whether it would be fitted for the task. Mr. Winston Churchill, in his speech at Sun- by derland, following on the crush- ing defeat of the Coalition in Spen Valley, said that "the break- up of the forces which sustain the present National Government would only result in pushing the Labour Party into power, at a period in its development when it is quite unfitted-for the respon-
