A RUSSIAN'S LOSS.

Poor old Simonoff! A herm- less old salt, he expressed great indiggnation at the treatment he received at the hands of Chinese hooligans yesterday.

He made purchases of provisions at a shop and on coming out was met by a gang of loafers who were intent en robbing him of his money. They crowded round and hustled him until one of their number, a ferret-eyed youth, had abstracted ...a $20 bill and his passport from

his breast pocket and made off with them. Simonoff gave chase, and grabbed the thief. In some mysterious way, the money bad been passed on, and only the passport could be recovered from the thief. With the help of a policeman the thief was marched 10 the Station.

The Inspector on duty had a problem to solve in trying to understand what Simonoff said. The Police had quite a hunt round town to locate an interpreter who could master the intricacies of Simonoff's language, and were in dispair until, happily, Mr. Meidan, of the Russian Con- sulate, came to the rescue at the eleventh hour. Ho'figured as the Interpreter in the case which was heard before Mr. N. L. Smith this morning. The ferret-eyed youth was given six weeks, though Simonoff.could not derive much happiness on this count, as he has still to mourn the loss of his money,
