The Daily Chronicle's Berlin correspondent writes:--

The fate of the Government hangs on the issue of the great Erzberger-Helfferich Abel case which is now before the court here in Berlin.

It is attracting enormous public attention.

Should judgment go against Herr Erzberger, the Minister of Finance, leader of the great Catholic Centre party, and one of the pillars of the present Govern-: ment, then his position in the Cabinet, and consequently the cu operation of his party in the Administration, will become im- possible.

A Goremment without the Centre party Would be like "Hamlet" without the Prince of Denmark.

It is an extremely interesting case. Dr. Helfferich the darling of the Pan-Germans and the ally of Ludendorf in the campaign designed to bring back something like the old regimes has long been pursuing Herr Erzberger with a pitiless vendetta.

Dr. Helfferich will be membered as having held "a variety of posts under the old regime: possessed of a biting tongue and an offensive manner, he was always at loggerheads with the Reichstag; his official career has been anything but brilliant. Being appointed succes. sor to Count Mirbach, who was murdered in Moscow, he even- tually made a hurried and rather undignified exit from Russia.
