Harland and Wolff bought up the shipbuilding yard belonging to: Messrs Caird and Coy and in 1917 a scheme of extension was drawn up under which it was proposed to take in a large part of the aur- rounding area, including the Old West Kirk and churchyard. The area chiefly affected is one of the oldest parts of the town and con- A good deal of slum property, which will be swept away. The scheme was promoted by Greenock Corpor- ation and Greenock Harbour Trust as a result of certain pro- posals of Messrs.
