Colonel Leslie Wilson, in reply, wrote: The number of standard ships com- pleted or completing to the account of the Shipping control- ler is 422. One hundred and thirty eight have been delivered to foreign purchasers. As re- gards the last part of the ques- tion, it is not possible to make arrangements for the continued employment of officers and men previously engaged on these vessels, but every assistance possible is given to unemployed masters and officers by the Re- settlement Branch of this Minis- try by the help of which a large number of such officers have found employment.

EMPRESS OF IRELAND CASE The sinking of the Empress of Ireland in a collision in the River St. Lawrence on May 29th, 1914, with great loss of life, was recalled in an appeal recently before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. It will be remembered that Mr. Laurence Irving end his wife Miss Mabel Hackney, besides other well-known people, were the ship. The appeal was brought among those who went down with by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, the owners of the ship, who claimed to rank equally with others in respect of loss of life in the division of the sum realised by the sale of the Storstad, the sbin which sank the liner, and which was held to blame for the collision. The Supreme Court

of Canada gave a preference to the life claimants and against this decision

the company appealed. For the respondents it was pointed out that if the contention of the railway com- pany were upheld there would be nothing left for the other claim. ants, as the claim of the appell- ants amounted to 2,500,000 dollars, whereas the fund in court was only 180,000 dollars. The Judio- ial Committee now, reversed the decision of the Canadian Court,. and directed that the fand should be divided among all, the parties in proportion to the amounts of their respective claims.
