Though the amount of profit would justify the declaration of a higher dividend, yet in order tɔ. place the Bank on a more solid basis, the Directors propose to create out of the profit a Reserve Fund of $200,000 which I trust will have the whole hearted sup- port of the shareholders. Besides its branch at Saigon, which was es- tablished a few months ago, and ts Shanghai Office, which will be opened shortly, the Directors pro-¡ pose to establish two other branches this year, one at Hai- phong and the other at Canton.

A Savings D9- partment will be established in the course of this year, and the question of the installation of safe- deposit boxes has had the serious consideration of the Directors. In view of the fact that the premises now occupied by the Bank are like- is to be reconstructed, the Direr- tors have recently acquired the premises next to the Netherlands India Commercial Bank known as Nos. 10 and 10A, Des Voeux Road Central, for the accommodation of the Head Office. GENERAL NEWS.

&

£15,100 FOR A BO K. High prices for rare old books were realised recently at Sothe- by's when the Britwell Court library was cold. Within 15 seconds the first lot, the only known copy of Barnes' Treatise on Fishing, 1520, was sold to Messrs. Quaritch for £1,70. The name of Mr. G. D. Smith was pur- heard prominently as chaser, and it generally signified that American collectors are intererested in the sale. Heber's collection of Elizabethan Broad- sides and Ballads caused quite a stir. The opining bid was £1,000, and by hundreds the offers up to £6,400. at which figure Mr. Smith beat Mr. Quaritch. Aix leaves of Caxton's'in the work "The Curial" went to Mr. Quaritch for £2,980. For the Shakespeare "Venus and Adonis and the "Passionate Pil- grim," there was an opening bid. of £2,000. When £15,000 had been called, Mr. G. B. Smith's offer remained unchallenged by Mr. Quaritch, and the hammer fell on a sum which is a record for an amount realised for a book at auction. ·
