POPULARITY OF THE KILT
Consideration is being given in official quarters to the subject of Highland dress in the Army, with a view to drastic reforma. A Sub- Committee of the General Com- mittee on Dress and Uniform of the War Office has been specially charged to deal with this matter. They have already made in- vestigations amongst High- land experts and authorities. The Committee has beld meet- ings in Edinburgh, and chief- tains of Highland clans, officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of Highland regiments. as well as military tradesmen, bave given their views. The pro- pesals for a change, in some cases. are welcomed rather than resent- ed amongst those interested in Highland lore and in the retention of Highland tradition as ex- emplified in the matter of dress. One motive on the part of the Army authorities in con- templating reform bas been that of economy..
The full Highland military dress is expensive, and it is felt possibly that the cost may have borne heavily upon young officers, and may have, in some instances, deterred suitable men from seek- ing commissions in Highland regiments.
