The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and its associated com. panies, like many other British companies at the present moment, are considering very seriously which of the trades formerly carried on by the North German Lloyd and Hamburg America Lines it is their duty in the inter- ests of the national welfare to develop. They are postponing announcing their future policy because they have lust so many vessels in the service of the coun- try during the war, and have many of their remaining vessels still being reconditioned. Ther feel it their first duty to protect their regular trades, and they are holding their hands for the mo- ment as regards the trades which in the past were largely carried on by enemy companies.

US. AND PROFICIENCY. The United States are out for 100 per cent. of proficiency, and are doing many things to secure ht." said Mr. W. A. Appleton, the secretary of the General Federa- tion of Trade Unions, on board the White Star liner Baltic, which arrived at Liverpool from New York recently. Mr. Appleton has been in America studying labour questions, and he found that the American working man was too close to nature not to know that he had to produce to live: He lives by his production, and still has the spirit of the old settler in him that unless he produces he will starve. The national spirit in America seemed greater than that of any other country. He would like to see a mission sent out to America from this country consisting of masters and men, untainted by propaganda Or affected by controversial points.

SHANGHAI LINE.—PASSENGERS, MAILS AND CARGU. Speaking of the prosperity of Excellent Saloon accommodation amidships. Electric Light and America, "Mr. Appleton said that Fans in Salcen and State-rooms. Regular schedule service between many trades

in this country Canton, Hongkong and Shanghai (thrice weekly) and Tsingtao would have to wake up. He weekly), taking Cargo on through Bills of Lading to all Yangtare. instanced the cotton trade, and and Northern China Porte. Passengers are Landed in Shanghai, pointed out that in America cotton avoiding the inconvenience of transhipment at Woosung. Woven goods such as men's BANGKOK LINE.~Weekly service to and from Bangkok via underwear were of greater variety

and far cheaper than was the case in this country.
