GRAVE SITUATION IN SYRIA.

London, Jan. 12. A Cairo telegram of Jan. 8th says the situation in Syria is ex- zeedingly grave. Paris, Jan. 13. Owing to interruption of the telegraphs the full list of survivors of the Afrique has not yet been published, bat 483 souls were aboard and hitherto thirty are re- ported saved.

The "Afrique's" Jast message to the "Ceylon" intimated that the passengers and crew were taking to the boats Thereafter there was silence.

The "Matin" reports that the Ceylon has landed a considerable number of passengers saved from the Afrique at La Pallice. Some of the saved have arrived at Port Rochefort.
