THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.
London, Jan 15. A comprehensive account of the great infvenza epidemic has been issued in a report by the Local Gor- ernment Board. The writer, tra- cing the origin, points out that the epidemic of influenza prevalent in" China and Japan in March, 1918, was not reported in Spain until May, 1915 He opines that the dis ease originated in China, corning to America and thence to Europe: or, alternatively, woriginated in America-proseeding thence-East-- and West. In Britain the Grand Fleet and the Army were first to suffer. Glasgow was the sent of the first civilian outbreak in May, In the Autumn epidemics, the princi- pal perts. Portsmouth, Southamp ten and Liverpool, first affected. suffered lightly but the land towns, suffering later, had more severe results. Systematic enquiry at Manchester shows that during the summer wave the ages most affect- ed were 13 to 45 and in winter from 2 to 13 in males and 1 to 45 in females. The report adds that it does not appear that one attack was inrariably powerful in protecting against others. The results were con tradictory but may be reconciled by the hypothesis that there were several strains of the influenza virus conferring protection against others. but each ware having a peculiar dominant strain producing a certain ware of individuality.
