FINE PERFORMANCE OF CARMEN."

One could begin to write of last night's, opera at the Theatre Royal in many ways. One could recall how long ago it is since re sidents had the pleasure of hear- ing opera at all; one could speak of the particular opera itself and how it has grown from a despised and rejected work into one of. the most popular; or one could animadvert on the practice of starting theatre performances so lare here; but, after all. "Carmen" philosophic

essentially drama, a page from life revealed and told to the empanimen of exquisite muse. It is a story ruined of slighted love, of a career and the tragedy of despair that follows. And it is this, given in the picturesque Spanish setting and amidst the romanticism of the times in which the characters) moved, that will always consti- tute the main appeal. Rich as the opera is în musical excel ence, it is richer in dramatic power-a power that has to be infused al- most entirely by Carmen "herself and her soldier lover, Don Josa. Last evening Miss Burskaya, as the farmer, and Mr. Daniloff, as the latter, gave those who went to the City Hall an impassioned presentation that was the feature of an undo bredly successful opening of what promises to be a most succesful season.

The personal effects of the late Water Speed were auctioned this morning at the Central Police Station. A sum of $225 was realised, which, after transfer into sterling, will be transmitted to his widow. Sergeant Tom Pitt was the auctioneer.

The mere fact that a meeting of Kowloon residents has to be Seld on the Hongkong side strongly points the need of some sort of Public Hail on the other side of the harbour. At times it seemed hardly fall enough to give the needed emphasis, whilst at others, the brasses rather overpowered the strings, but that is only en passant. To further criticise would be superfluous. The feature of the evening was undoubtedly the singing and dramatic character- isation of Miss Burskaya, who made a Carmen such as intended. Possessing a highly- trained, clear and flexible mezzo- soprano voice, and infusing into Sargeant Peplow, who has been all her work the coquetry of the six years in charge of the Finger part, Miss Burskaya was easily Print Bureau, is on transfer to the the central figure round which Sanitary Department as In-pect- all eise moved.
