SUBMARINE AS A WAR WEAPON.; How very serious the "U" boat menace was to British merchant shipping is revealed for the first time with any real degree of accuracy in the Admiralty return just issued. Out of a total of |18,500,000 tons of vessels over 500 toos which comprised the British Mercantile Marine at the out- break of war, no less than 7,750,- 090 tons were lost through enemy action chiefly represented by the submarine. The loss of life in these vessels was 15,287.
There were also lost 434 lives of fisher- men, and fishing boats of a gross tonnage of 71.763 tons. A smaller number of vesels, but with an aggregate tonnage of 8,007,957 tons, were attacked, and in mary cases damaged, but not sunk, and here the loss of life was 592, or & total loss of 15,313 through enemy action on the sea, the submarine being mainly responsible. One vessel was attacked six times, but escaped destruction, another escaped five attacks, to be sunki at the sixth attempt. Three times Įthe enemy tried to sink the Oly
mpic, but failed, chiefly owing to the giant liner's great speed and the skilful manoeuvring of her commander.
