AN IMPROVED LIFEBUOY. An iroprovement in the cover- ing of lifebuoys has been made by Captain F. W. Jones of the s. Cheuachow in which the buoy is covered with closely woven rattan in place of the painted canvas at present in use. The advantages are that the buoy is much lighter in actual weight and has, in addition, quite 30 per cent. more buoyancy in the water when compared with a canvas covered buoy which has received four or five coats of paint. When it is remembered that canvas covers receive as much as 20 coats during the life of the buoy and that the rattan cover requires no paint, the advantage in this respect is obvious. Further, the rattan covering allows of a certain amount of ventilation to the cork beneath preventing the rotting that is so common = feature of canvas covered intors using to water gaining admittance through small leaks and being retained in the buoy.

MORE ABOUT CAST SHIPS. It is reported that the Cast Steel Ship Corporation, a concern recently organized in New York, has developed plans for casting the component parts of steel ships. and joining them together by welding. The inventor of this process claims that the cast steel ship will effect a saying of 20 per} cent in the cost of construction, and that its cargo capacity will be 4 per cent. greater than the ordinary type of framed, rolled steel ship. The lower first 'cost will not only, it is claim- ed, be accompanied by & corresponding reduction in the fixed charges of operation, includ- ing interest, insurance and de- preciation, but it is expected that these items which amount to about 17 per cent. for the usual type of cargo-boat will be reduced to 13.6 per cent. for the cast steel ship. It is predicted that the increase in cargo capacity and the reduction of fixed charges will make it cheaper to operate cast steel ships under the American lag thar to operate the ordinary type of riveted skip under the British flag.

For New York
by far the greatest part of the total orders booked by the com- pany, have been cancelled. Great workshops, erected for the construction of war and merchant ships, are now for the most part out of use. The scarcity of coal and of other raw materials and the labour situation render the future outlock very gloomy. In addition, there is the uncertainty as to the possible partial application of the Treaty of Peace, which impedes
AMERICAN ASIATIC S. S. CO. the work for the reconstruction
of the merchant marine. The work of docking and repair- Ling" is also affected through the surrender of the navy and the merchant vessels. The company's accounts show net profits of 2,408,000 marks (pre-war £120,400) for 1916-19, as compared with 2,747,000 marks (£137,350) in the preceding year, and a divided is recommended at the SHEWAN TOMES & CO. rate of 5 per cent. on the Ordin
