FOREIGN STEAMER IN JAPANESE DOCKYARD.

A steamer is now under con- struction at the Uraga Dock Yard, Kanagawa prefecture, for the Messageries Maritimes, with a displacement of 11,000 tons. She was to have been launched on the 21st ultimo.

THE SALARY QUESTION, "Sirius," writes as follows to

and Engineering: Shipping "Singapore has by arbitration obtained a liberal wage for its mercantile officers and engineers. Excessive beat is the greatest hardship a mariner has to con- tend with when sailing out of Singapore. Lots of Singapore officers and engineers experience typhoons when on the Hongkong run and in some cases have been held up and robbed by Hongkong pirates. Again the raw cold of Shanghai winter with its other extremes of weather: the hot season in summer, for instance, is not by any means pleasant to the flying fish part of our services so the sooner an equality of or standardization of wages.com to pass for these smaller ships, the better it will be for both ship- owners and their floating staff. Growls and grumblings cau be heard like June thunderstorms

Rotterdam he present mixed up state of their remuneration but equal rights at and for all ports would give pleasant weather to all concerned as there is little to choose from the perils and hard- ships encountered by either."

BRITAIN'S LATEST DESTROYER. 10:h. On Friday, October Messrs. J. Samuel White & Cɔ, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, deli- vered to the Navy a new and powerful destroyer of the "II" " class. She was built in the
