SHIPPING NEWS.

THE TRADE OF DUNKIRK.

On September 1, the British Admiralty evacuated the naval base at Dunkirk. The extra space thus available for the trade port will be very of the welcome д the cargo arriv

reaches the formidable ing total of 67,000 tons per week, and on August 30 arrivals had so far exceed the evacuations inland that 178,392 tons of goods were encumbering the docks. The difficulty is the lack of railway wagons, locomotives and labour.

CONGESTION ON TYNESIDE. The North of England Steam- ship Owners Association recently considered an intimation that no coal can be loaded for France or Italy until a few days afterwards. They decided to send telegrams to the various controlling authorities protesting and pointing out that work at the docks is almost at a standstill. There were 12 vacant berths in Tyne Dock and 43 ships waiting cargo, and 22,000 tons of coal at the docks and 30,000 wait- ing loading from the colliery sidings. If exporters are not am.allowed to deal with the tonnage Labour troubles are feared.
